The Anglo-Hellenic League
On October 11 last year, members were treated to an interesting lecture ‘From Bronze Age to Space Age: Archaeology Meets Science in the Minoan- Mycenaean World’ by Dr Holly Martlew and Professor Robert Arnott, Director of the Centre for the History of Medicine, Birmingham University. The venue was St Columba’s Church Hall, Knightsbridge. (An article based on Dr Martlew’s lecture appears in The Anglo-Hellenic Review, Spring 2008)
On November 14 the annual Charity Lunch was held at nearby Searcy’s, in Pavilion Road, featuring in addition to the lunch the usual impressive array of stalls in the lower hall selling produce, attractive Christmas gifts and floral arrangements. Part of the proceeds raised at the event were destined for the Shooting Star Children’s Hospice in Hampton, Middlesex, which works in conjunction with the Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Childen. The Guests of Honour were the wife of H.E. The Greek Ambassador to Great Britain, Mrs Pispinis, the Consul General of the Greek Embassy, Mrs Theofili, and the representative of the Shooting Star Hospice Charity, Mr Mike Hey. During the course of the lunch Mr Hey spoke about the valuable work of the charity, which supports children in the local community suffering from life- threatening illness. After lunch Mrs Pispinis and Mrs Theofili drew the prizewinning raffle tickets. The League would like to thank all members who contributed raffle prizes, rented stalls, or purchased advertising in the lunch programme.
