Sir Stephen Fry succeeds Prince Michael of Kent as new President of the Anglo-Hellenic League

Sir Stephen Fry has been elected President of the Anglo-Hellenic League.  A celebrated international actor, author, and television presenter, he is also an established philhellene, decorated by Greece for his writings on heroes and myths in the classical world.

Sir Stephen begins his three-year term, following the retirement of HRH Prince Michael of Kent as the League’s President.  Prince Michael had served in this role for more than four decades, speaking at events and being guest-of-honour.  His commitment to the League followed that of his mother, Princess Marina.  She had been born in Athens and was granddaughter of King George I of Greece.

In noting the transition, the League’s Chair, Professor Kevin Featherstone, said, ‘We are very grateful to His Royal Highness for his tremendous support to the League over so many years, which has been invaluable.  In our upcoming development, Stephen Fry will be a great asset to help us expand our activities and membership.  He is an international personality. We are delighted that he has accepted our invitation and we look forward to working with him’.

Stephen Fry commented that, ‘I am so proud and honoured to have been asked to take on the presidency of the Anglo-Hellenic League. I know that I am not alone in feeling the uniquely affectionate and profound bond that has long existed between Britain and Greece. The League works hard to strengthen that bond. While of course respecting and celebrating Greece’s historic contribution to culture, art and so many other fields of human endeavour, it is all about Greece now and today. I am thrilled to be a part of that’.
